There were no injuries in the two-match sweep. That’s good news for the Asian Games team, which had to play seven games in a short period of time.
There”s more good news. Song Mingyu is back in action.
The South Korean Asian Games soccer team, led by head coach Hwang Sun-hong, held an official training session at Aiqing High School in Jinhua, China, on Monday afternoon. Korea will play its first match against Kuwait tomorrow (Nov. 19). South Korea’s Song Min-gyu warms up with a run. 2023.09.18 / firstname.lastname@example.org
Song Min-kyu warmed up by himself during training on Sept. 18. Song Min-kyu ran on the field by himself for the entirety of the 15 minutes of open training time given to reporters. A Korea Football Association (KFA) official said, “Song Min-kyu has been doing recovery training,” explaining that the injury was not serious enough to prevent him from playing, but he did not participate in team training.
On the 22nd, he was grouped separately with Lee Han-beom, Kim Jung-hoon, Min Sung-joon, Choi Joon, and Park Kyu-hyun for a brief warm-up. Of course, there was Lee Kang-in.
Goalkeeper Kim Jung-hoon, Min Sung-joon, Song Min-kyu, and Lee Kang-in have yet to play in a match, while Lee Han-beom and Park Kyu-hyun started the first game and were rested for the second. Choi Jun came on as a late substitute in Game 2 after being rested in Game 1. These are the players with less playing time.
However, Song Min-kyu was at the team’s training session today. In particular, he practiced rondo (stealing the ball) with the “first team” players, including Seol Young-woo, Cho Young-wook, Park Jin-seop, Choi Jun, Park Jin-seop, and Baek Seung-ho.
Song Min-kyu is one of Hwang Sun-hong’s key offensive resources with his excellent burst and link-up play. He made a name for himself with the Pohang Steelers in the 2020 season, scoring 10 goals and adding six assists in 27 league appearances, and is currently playing for Jeonbuk Hyundai in the 2023 season, scoring six goals and adding two assists in 25 league appearances.
In the first and second legs, Hwang Sun-hong scored 13 goals without Song Min-kyu. Jung Woo-young and Cho Young-wook recorded hat tricks and multi-goal games in the first leg, while Baek Seung-ho, Uhm Won-sang, Park Jae-yong, Hong Hyun-seok, Uhm Won-sang, and Lee Jae-ik scored goals. Ahn Jae-jun also scored for the second consecutive game.
“The coach also asked me if I could play in the next game, so I said yes,” said Song Min-kyu, who was interviewed at the training center on the 23rd. “I wanted to play, but when I talked to him, he said he wanted me to play in full physical condition and not overdo it, so I was more patient and watched the game.”
“As a striker, you have to have the desire to score goals and you have to be confident. If I get to play another game, I’ll definitely do my best to score a goal,” he said, adding that he was eager to score.
With the likes of Uhm Won-sang and Chung Woo-young already a threat on the flanks, Song Min-gyu’s addition to the squad could prove invaluable in the tight schedule of the tournament.
There’s more good news. Lee Kang-in has joined the team training. Lee Kang-in is not a “bonus” as the title suggests, but after traveling 21 days to join the squad, he is expected to make a brief appearance as a substitute in the third game.
Meanwhile, Song Min-kyu and Lee Kang-in practiced side-by-side as a team. They could start or come off the bench against Bahrain on the 24th.
